Photobiomodulation ( PBM) Therapy / Low level Laser Therapy (LLL)

DPV Health offers this treatment at our Mill Park Medical Centre.

Photobiomodulation (PBM), previously referred to as low-level laser therapy (LLLT), or “cold” laser, is a form of light Therapy that utilise low intensity of light with LASER (Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation) or LEDs (light emitting diodes) to modulate cell physiology to treat a variety of conditions.

It is different from the “hot” lasers which cause thermally mediated tissue destruction in surgery, tissue rejuvenation and hair removal.  Unlike surgical lasers, the intensity of low-level laser is not high enough to produce heat, so it cannot burn or heat the skin.

In past 60 years there are thousands of published studies documenting its effects in a range of medical applications. Health professionals around the world use LLLT to treat patients suffering from a range of pain conditions. It recently is used to treat many other conditions including Neurological conditions.

What is Photobiomodulation  / Low level Laser Therapy?

A Probe is placed near or in contact with the skin, allowing the light energy (photons) to penetrate tissue. The photons interacts with chromophores located in cells resulting in photophysical and photochemical. As a result there is alterations at the molecular, cellular and tissue levels of the body.

How low-level laser works

It treats conditions by stimulating anti-inflammatory activity, optimising tissue repair, enhancing muscle function and modulating peripheral nerve activity, including nociceptors and central nervous system neurons to enhance brain function.

Low-level laser can treat the following conditions:

  • Joints pain, e.g. Arthritic conditions
  • Soft-tissue injuries (muscle tears, bruising, hematoma)
  • Tendinopathies, achillies tendinopathy, tennis elbow, plantar fasciitis
  • Pain relief of various aetiologies: Neck / Low Back pain /joint pain
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome,
  • Edema
  • Wound healing

Possible Side effects of Low-Level Laser Therapy

Some patients might experience mild side effects after treatment such as Tiredness, Nausea/dizziness, Photosensitivity, Euphoria, Over-sedated or sleeplessness, reactive pain
