Keeping a Balance to screen time
Moving our bodies regularly helps us stay strong, focused and feeling good. That’s why it’s important to keep a healthy balance between sedentary screentime and being active.
– Try to encourage your child to:
- Take movement breaks every 30–60 minutes.
- Swap one screen activity for an active one, like dancing, riding a bike, or playing outside.
- Use active video games like dance or fitness apps.
Strategies for managing screen time
Establishing clear guidelines for screen time at home can benefit you and your family long term.
Check or time how much your child uses a screen
As a family, discuss and decide which areas of the home should be screen free. This may include private places like bedrooms and bathrooms. This allows you as parent/caregivers the opportunity to monitor how long they are using technology for and understand their purpose.
It is important to model the preferred behaviour to your children. Being engaged with your child and having face-to-face interactions will help create more positive expectations around screen times at home.
Screens and technology are part of our everyday life. Going for a zero-tolerance policy to screen time is rarely realistic or reasonable, particularly for older children.
